Our first day in China was full of exploring the heart of the city. We woke up at the crack of dawn to watch the Peoples Liberation Army march through the square to raise the flag at sunrise in Tiananmen Square. It was a brisk, early morning walk but definitely worth it (then we went back to sleep). We visited The Forbidden City where the various emperors reigned. We learned that the audio tour devices weren’t all that insightful as everything described was captured on the walls outside each building. The city is huge with over 9,000 rooms which was quite impressive.
We walked over 24,000 steps so needless to say we were able to explore much of the city center; shops, backstreets, parks, etc. For dinner, we went to a restaurant called Made in China which a friend of Sean’s recommended. We loved the design where it had an entire wall full of various teapots and a beautiful wine cellar. We had the kung pao chicken, potstickers and noodles and witnessed in pleasure as someone ordered the duck next to us. They brought out the whole duck and sliced it carefully onto their plates.
