Beautiful Barcelona, Spain

We were lucky again with the weather - when we arrived via train at 8:30pm on Thursday the rain was starting to subside, then we got 4 beautiful days of sunshine! In this particular city we rented an apartment again, and I barely made it to the rental office before it closed at 9pm (literally, I left Jillian at a cappuccino shop with the bags and I sprinted). Then we had dinner on the first night at 11pm so we are fitting in perfectly with the culture here.

Our apartment is a great modern place in a residential area close to the subway so we were all set. We spent the first day visiting all the big tourist sights in the city center from the Barri Gotica to the famous Las Ramblas street. Everywhere we go we try to eat the food that is authentic to that area so we have been dining at several tapas restaurants. Our second day was spent seeing some of Antoni Gaudi’s works of architecture around the city. We spent the morning at the Temple de la Sagrada Familia, which is a temple designed by Gaudi that is still being constructed and will not be completed for another 25+ years. Then we headed to the Park Guell overlooking the city, where Gaudi’s work is everywhere in the form of buildings, mosaics, fountains, etc. Yesterday was a casual beach and laundry day, then today we walked everywhere seeing the Olympic village from the ‘92 games along with the waterfront and the old town “ribera” neighborhood.

The people have been really friendly and we’ve done a good job of being cautious and not getting pick-pocketed yet this trip (knock on wood). The one thing we can’t figure out here is the store hours. It seems so random as stores open and close whenever they want to, and hardly anything is open on Sunday and all the city museums are closed on Monday which we just found out today.

It’s been a lot of fun and we have some good pictures to share. Enjoy…
