Well, rain put a little damper on our visit to Christchurch, especially given that it’s summer here and supposed to be sunny and warm! Christchurch is considered to be the most English city outside of England, and we thought it definitely felt more proper than the rest of the NZ cities we’ve visited. This was our first port of call on the south island of New Zealand, which is supposed to be much less inhabited and naturally serene. The main attraction in the city of Christchurch is the Anglican Cathedral at the center of town, and we took a free guided tour to start the day off. What’s amazing to us is how young New Zealand is – much of its modern history has taken place only in the last 150 years so it is a very new country relatively speaking.
This was the day we should have planned to go outside of town to a sheep farm to watch farmers sheer the sheep but we didn’t figure that out until it was too late unfortunately (Did you know that New Zealand has only 4.5 million people but 27 million sheep!). Instead, we spent most of our day here exploring the city and visiting different sights within the city limits. The day wouldn’t be complete without a hot chocolate consumed by me (Sean), and frankly today was a pretty relaxed day. More to come from Dunedin.
