A Spectacular Day in Capri

After our first night on the ship, we were already in the first port of call; the city of Naples. Our plan was to catch an early ferry boat out of the harbor and spend the whole day on the island of Capri nearby. The ferry ride lasted about 45 minutes, putting us on the island by 9am.
Now the big attraction to see on Capri is something called the Blue Grotto, which is a cave cut into the cliffs on the far side of the island that little rowboats are able to paddle under the entrance of the cave and the view is supposedly amazing. When we arrived the locals said the waves were a little too rough to do this, so the four of us decided to go a different route.
We found a place in the harbor that rented boats to visitors for a reasonable price, and since we were feeling a little adventurous we decided to go for it. That was a good decision, as we spent the next two hours driving our little motor boat around the island by ourselves, stopping along the way for breathtaking views and little coves that doubled as swimming spots. We even stopped at another grotto, this one called the green grotto, which was a two-sided cave that all of us swam through to the other side. I must say we had the best time, and seeing the island of Capri from the water is the best way to do it!
After returning our boat we were all starving! We also learned that pizza originated in the Naples region of Italy, so we were determined to find the best pizza restaurant on Capri. Our book told us that restaurant is called Da Gemma, and it was in the city center just above the harbor. The pathway from the harbor to the city center was steep, and took us about 20 minutes to walk/hike up. By this time we were exhausted and hungry, but the view from the hilltop was worth the walk. The island is rocky but green, and absolutely stunning! We soon found our pizza restaurant and ordered 3 pizzas for the 4 of us to share, and let me tell you, they were simply amazing! Locals and tourists alike were dining in this restaurant overlooking the island. Pictures don’t do it justice, but they do give you a good idea.
Then, after a little shopping and photo-taking we hopped on the ferry and headed back to Naples to board the ship. It was a fabulous way to start the cruise, with many more good days to come. Enjoy the photos…
